Recently I have been painting at a much smaller size than usual. I was inspired to paint at this miniature scale when I received a letter from the Society For All Artists about a World Record Art Challenge. The challenge is to paint an image on an artist trading card. These cards are 64mm x 89mm (or 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"). I set to and began by cutting some of my favourite saunders waterford to the required size. Next came the painting. At first it seemed rather unusual to be painting at such a minute scale, after all I am used to working at 11" x 15"! I soon got the hang of it, and I have now created a nice little collection of these miniature watercolours. I have discovered that the best brushes to use are a #2 (SAA Detailer brush), and a #4 (SAA Large Detailer Brush). I have even taken four of these images to my framer and I will be exhibiting them later this year. Incidentally, when the these trading cards are offered for sale, they are referred to as ACEO (Art Card Editions and Originals). Now all I have to do is select one of the paintings to send off to the SAA as part of the challenge.
